Additional Criteria for Playground Impact Attenuating Sand

چکیده
Falls within children’s playgrounds result in long bone and serious injuries. To lower the likelihood severity of injury, impact attenuating surfaces (IAS) are installed area (fall zone). There three primary IAS materials used, namely: granulated rubber products, wood fibre sand. is a deficiency with existing test methods that they do not take account sand degradation over time. When children use playground, can occur when produces fines smaller particles low sphericity angular which fill voids between particles. These tend to bind its performance. This paper proposes an additional eliminate sands degrade above established threshold rate after installation due normal usage. properties fifteen were tested including particle shape, distribution, percentage degradation. accelerated ageing method applicable only or products. The best sourced from quarries located on rivers had eroded volcanic outcrops. shown least little no fines, their shape was rounded well-rounded. most reliable source for good quality these specific bends. mined at locations consistently tight size distribution.

Salmonellosis Outbreak Traced to Playground Sand, Australia, 2007–2009
A community outbreak of gastroenteritis in Australia during 2007-2009 was caused by ingestion of playground sand contaminated with Salmonella enterica Paratyphi B, variant Java. The bacterium was also isolated from local wildlife. Findings support consideration of nonfood sources during salmonellosis outbreak investigations and indicate transmission through the animal-human interface.
متن کاملBioaccessibility of lead in sand intended for playground sandboxes in Slovenia: a preliminary study.
Slovene press has recently expressed concern for the health of children who ingest playground sand contaminated with lead. However, current assessments may be overestimating the health risk, as they assume that human body absorbs the whole amount of a contaminant. The aim of our study was to see how much lead in sand intended for playground sandboxes in Slovenia really is absorbed and what heal...
متن کاملTesting the impact attenuation of loose-fill playground surfaces.
OBJECTIVES Our objective was to measure the impact attenuation performance of five types of loose-fill playground surfaces at a variety of drop heights, material depths, and conditions. METHODS In a laboratory setting, an instrumented head form was dropped on varying depths of loose-fill materials at one foot height increments until critical deceleration values were exceeded. The effects of t...
متن کاملAnalysis of energy flow during playground surface impacts.
The amount of energy dissipated away from or returned to a child falling onto a surface will influence fracture risk but is not considered in current standards for playground impact-attenuating surfaces. A two-mass rheological computer simulation was used to model energy flow within the wrist and surface during hand impact with playground surfaces, and the potential of this approach to provide ...
متن کاملSeverity of playground-related fractures: more than just playground factors?
INTRODUCTION Despite the establishment of playground safety standards, playground-related injuries are still a significant cause of extremity fractures in Singapore. This prospective study evaluates the dimensions and characteristics of our playgrounds, and their effect on fracture severity in an Asian population. We aim to correlate various playground risk factors with severity of the fracture...
